Choosing and Ordering Arcadia Stones Paving

Be sure that the product you have chosen is suitable for the project you are planning before ordering and definitely before starting to lay the paving.

Check quantities required and then check again. Order all materials to complete your project at the same time. To avoid delays to your project once it is underway do not start work until you are sure all materials you require are with your supplier.

Dimensions, Finish and Sizing

All dimensions quoted for natural stone are nominal and as most are hand-made they will be subject to manufacturing tolerance. The area coverage quoted in the brochure includes the appropriate joint widths to enable the correct amount of product to be purchased to cover a given area. Where space is critical and particularly when a circle or feature kit is being incorporated into a design, it is essential that the product is dry laid in order to understand the gaps required to make the feature work. Retrospective correction of gap once a job is underway is not always possible. Basic laying patterns with joint widths are available upon request from Arcadia Stones. We reserve the right to change dimensions and pack size without notice. As a part of the production process, natural stone will contain blemishes, veining, small chipping & small holes, all of which are natural characteristics of the stone. Most chips will not be visible once installed & pointed.

Order extra 5% for wastage, cuts & pieces that you may not like the look of.

All natural stone varies in colour, texture, markings & feel. These variations are what give natural stone its uniqueness and add to its appeal. Small samples will not always give an accurate reflection of how the patio will look once finished therefore we recommend you visit one of our stockists who will be happy to advise you. These variations are accepted as unavoidable within the landscaping industry. Natural stone will have a dimension tolerance of +/- 5mm.

Colour Variations

All natural stone contains a variation in colour, veining, shading, blemishes & other natural characteristics. These are all perfectly normal and not a sign of any fault in the product. Natural shade variations need to be evenly distributed across the paved area. If multi packs are ordered, open & son all crates so a good colour mix can be achieved. Arcadia Stones cannot be held responsible or accept liability for natural characteristics within the stones.

Health & Safety, Manual Handling

Many of the Arcadia Stones products are heavy to lift and some may exceed 20 kg in weight. Products weighing over 20 kg should be treated as a Two Man Lift'. If in doubt please consult the Health & Safety Executive website: https://www.hse.gov.uk, for specific H &S information.

Protective gloves, footwear and suitable clothing should be considered. Also eye protection and face mask are very important when cutting or breaking stone products.

Maintaining and After Care Your Paying

Despite what is claimed by some suppliers and installers, there is no such thing as maintenance free paving. All paving needs a little bit of care and attention to keep it in tip-top condition. By choosing Arcadia Stones Paving, you have started with the very best, so the maintenance requirements will be lesser than those of cheaper offerings.

Arcadia Stones products require sweeping on a regular basis to remove general dirt and detritus that accumulates on any external paved area.

Washing with water and a stiff broom will assist in the cleaning. If using a power washer care must be taken not to dislodge the pointing from the joints and overuse may also affect the surface of the flags.

Most gains can be removed with soap and water. For more stubborn stains there are propriety cleaners on the market but these must be checked if suitable for use on natural stone of whatever composition. Their technical department should advise.

Acids must not be used on natural stone as this may affect colour and finish of the stone.

Efflorescence

Most of the problems involving discolouration and picture framing occur with relatively porous stone types when they have been allowed to dry out completely. Having stone sat in the summer sun causes it to lose all of its moisture content by evaporation. When it Is then laid on a wet mortar bed or pointed with a wet mortar, it 'sucks in moisture, bringing cement particles, clay fines and iron minerals with it, which are later deposited on the surface as further evaporation dries out the paving once more.

Regardless of which stone is being used and regardless of technique, it’s important to remember that stone is a wholly natural product and as such there is an inherent variation in Porosity, colour, texture and grain size. It’s not unknown for one flagstone to discolour while its immediate neighbour remains completely unaffected. This does not mean there is a problem with the Moan: in just the way things are with natural stone paving.

While discolouration and picture framing can look unattractive when first encountered, the effect and its visual Impact do lessen over time and it is quite likely that in 12 months the problem will have lessened significantly or disappeared completely. Don't be panicked into ripping up and replacing affected paving immediately. Give it time, allow nature to run its course and review the situation the following year

Sealing Your Paving

Many homeowners choose to seal their new paving to protect it from accidental staining and to reduce the risk of allowing algae and lichens to establish themselves on the surface and joints, discoloring the paving and masking the natural beauty of the completed work.

There are many different sealants on the market, providing different finishes and often changing the appearance of the paving. High gloss sealants rarely look 'natural' and can sometimes make the treated surface slippery and unsafe. Polyurethane sealants are best suited to concrete block paving rather than natural stone. If you intend to seal your paving, make sure it is completely dry and free from efflorescence. It may take a period of time to ensure that the bed underneath has fully dried out. Always use a quality natural stone sealer and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
